Different Types of Bath Lifts

anthonyrobbins asked:

Bath lifts are of great use to physically challenged individuals, since these provide them with an increased sense of independence. A bath lift rules out the need for a personal caretaker each time one wants to take a bath. A bath lift is therefore an economical option in that you can save the money that might otherwise be spent on the caretaker or nurse.

A bath lift is a device that helps to raise/lower an individual from/into the bathtub. Depending on the various facilities, different types of bath lifts are available in the market. A bath lift is connected to the floor of the bathtub. A seat or bench provided in the lift helps in easy upper and lower movement of the individual in the bathtub. A swivel seat helps in easy usage of bath lifts. As the bathtubs use strong suction cups, no modification is needed for the actual bathtub. Most of the bath lifts use a special battery which has enough charge for raising and lowering the lift.

There is another type of bath lift which does not use electricity. It is powered using water. This model has a special fitting which is joined to the shower head. However, battery powered bath lifts are the commonly used ones. Bath lifts can be easily carried from one place to another. Bath lifts provide maximum safety and convenience to physically disabled people. Bath lifts can also be used in professional care centers.

Bath lifts can be easily installed without drilling. Moreover, you need not spend much money for installation. The individual using the bath lift can easily control its operation with the help of a push button. A bath lift provides privacy and acts a personal assistant for a physically disabled person in the bathroom. You investment on a bath lift is really worthwhile since you gain by maximum safety in the bathroom.

Advantages Of Owning A Scooter For Vacations

Barney Garcia asked:

Being on the go, traveling the world, and seeing new exciting places is all a part of retiring and having fun. If you have had a hip replacement, or a knee replacement, and you are planning a vacation or a trip you should consider a motorized scooter, so you can see the world in style without the pain! A motorized scooter is a method of moving, traveling from place to place, when you are unable to walk long distances due to pain or other distressful situations.

Maneuverability is a main concern for those who are shopping for a scooter. The Sprinter is one scooter that easily will turn corners closely and could easily be used in the home. The use of wheelchairs is often cumbersome, but the scooter provides you with many more options of moving from room to room or through the mall without worry of being in another person's way while you are in the same area.

The Benefits Of Owning A Motorized Scooter

Owning your own scooter allows you to hop on and go. You can move independently and you don't have to rely on anyone for anything. You don't have to wait until someone has the time to take you somewhere. If you are able to walk a bit, you can take your motorized scooter along in the car, or in the bus, and when you feel tired or your legs start hurting too much, you can use the scooter and still enjoy your time away from the home with the convenience of your own.

A motorized scooter allows your body to heal even while you are taking a vacation. Your body will heal from an operation or from a disease, because you are not putting too much strain and stress on your body. The more stress and strain on your legs, the longer you will require for healing. Moving around is always good for you, and walking too much can be painful sometimes, but a motorized scooter gives you a pain free method of getting around.

Additional advantages to taking your scooter on vacation include that you will be able to use your scooter, even if the store or establishment does not have a scooter available. Riding on a new scooter, in a store or at a museum can be difficult to become accustomed to but using your own scooter you will feel comfortable and at ease. You will not be tired during your trip and you won't be putting yourself through additional pain by avoiding walking too much.

A Guide to Wheelchairs

Euroscooters asked:

Wheelchairs are relatively simple when compared to mobility scooters and powerchairs. However, there are still some important factors that need to be taken into consideration when choosing a wheelchair.

Different people will have different requirements for their wheelchair. For example, somebody who uses a wheelchair all the time will need a different type of wheelchair to someone who keeps one at home for occasional use by a relative.

Self propelling wheelchairs have large rear wheels and are usually pushed by the user although these wheelchairs can also be pushed by an attendant. Small rear wheeled models are called transit wheelchairs, and need to be pushed by an attendant.

As people are different sizes, wheelchairs are available with different seat widths and it is important that the seat is the right size, as the amount of comfort and support that the wheelchair can provide is dependant on it being the correct size.

Modern wheelchairs can be easily folded along the length of the wheelchair, so that the sides and handles are pushed together. Some wheelchairs have a folding back, which helps to reduce the size of the folded wheelchair. Most self propelled and transit models have quick release wheels which makes transportation easier. The leg rest can often also be removed. The heavier a wheelchair is, the heavier it will be to push, and the more difficult it will be to put in and take out of a car. Aluminium wheelchairs are lighter than steel wheelchairs but a little more expensive, but the weight difference when pushing or transporting the wheelchair will make up for the difference in price.

Some models of wheelchair are highly configurable, and the size and type of rear wheels, front castors and arm rests can be specified so that the wheelchair meets the exact needs of the user. Self propelled wheelchairs often have height adjustable rear wheels which means that the wheels can be fitted in the optimum position for the user. Having the wheels in the best position means that each time the user pushes, the wheelchair travels as far as possible. This is not as important for a self propelled wheelchair that will be pushed by an attendant.

Most wheelchairs have removable armrests so that transferring to and from the wheelchair is much easier. Some wheelchairs also have height adjustable armrests so that the most comfortable and supportive position can be easily found. Adjustable leg rests are found on most models, and also ensure that the user is in the most comfortable position. Anti tip wheels are fitted as standard on some wheelchairs and provide extra security when going over obstacles such as curbs.

A motor is available that will turn most traditional wheelchairs into an attendant controlled powerchair. This can be of real benefit if the terrain is rough or hilly. Because the motor does most of the work, the attendant doesn't have to push as hard. The wheelchair power pack has a range of around 10 miles, and is ideal for both long and short journeys. If required, the power pack can be removed quickly and easily, and transferred to a different wheelchair.

A wheelchair can provide health benefits and can help to bring back or maintain independence, and is be easy to operate and transport.

Keep On Wheelin

Raquel Simons asked:

As much as individuals in a wheelchair live ordinary lives, the issues of accessibility always seem to make an appearance. Even the simplest of things - such as everyday transportation - can be a burden without the proper services. That's why I was excited to hear about the newly equipped taxicabs that are helping to expand the transportation possibilities for those with limited mobility.

A newly passed city policy in Louisville, KY (and many other cities across the U.S. and Canada) now requires any taxicab services, with more than 25 cars in its fleet, to have a small percentage that are wheelchair-accessible. I realize that this is far from opening up widespread transportation opportunities, but we can agree that it's definitely a step in the right direction.

The accessible taxicabs will be specially designed with a ramp or a wheelchair lift for full accessibility. The cabs will be able to accommodate one passenger in a wheelchair plus two additional passengers. This is great news for those requiring transportation outside the hours of normal public bus service.

Information on transportation and accessibility for disabled travelers is one of the main topics covered by Robert Bennett, a writer for thewheelchairsite.com - an online informational guide to electric and manual wheelchairs, scooters, mobility accessories, and wheelchair news in general. Recently the website has been overhauled, and it now sports a brand new more user-friendly design, complete with interactive blogs and a more interactive reader mailbag where you can post your questions or comments.

The Enabled Traveler, a blog devoted to accessible travel is also interactive. Robert Bennett writes his column to fellow travel enthusiasts with physical limitations. He is a dedicated social worker who devotes much of his time to writing publications on the topic of disability. Each week he offers new helpful information on everything you need to know to make traveling a successful experience. Think of him as your own personal travel expert, providing accessibility information on airports, hotels, trains, buses, and popular vacationing destinations. If you love to travel, then be sure to check out this fantastic new blog.

The Wheels in the City Column has also been transformed into an interactive blog, where readers can now post their comments and share their own stories. Chantal Huinink, writer of Wheels in the City, writes about the joys and troubles she faces each day concerning living life in a wheelchair. Born with spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy, Chantal uses an electric wheelchair. She is a psychology student at the University of Guelph, and enjoys sharing her stories, witty humor, and her adventures with readers.

The Rules Of Basketball

Alan Richardson asked:

Basketball was invented in a pursuit for an indoor game, which would provide complete fitness. Dr James Naismith, a Canadian physical instructor, wrote down the basic rule for the game after initial rejection of many ideas, at a YMCA Training School. This game was officially played for the first time on January 20, 1892, in the YMCA Gymnasium, at Springfield College. Women began playing basketball in 1892, at Smith College, and different sets of rules were laid down for them.

This is a team sport where two teams, consisting of nine members each, throw ball into a ten-foot high basket of the opponent in order to get a score. While one team member aims for the basket, member of the other team prevents him from doing so. The team that has the highest score wins the game. The ball is dribbled and carried forward. In competitive basketball variation there are lot of regulations and the handling of the ball is restricted. Less regulated versions have been developed for recreational purposes and in some countries, this game is considered as a spectator sport.

Initially a soccer ball was used in basketball after which a brown colored ball was introduced. But to increase the visibility of the ball to the players and spectators alike the color was changed to orange, in 1950s by Tony Hinkle. Initially dribbling wasn't a part of the game. It was included in the game in the 1950s.

Different versions have different rules and time limits. According to NBA, some of the rules have been discussed here. The basketball court should be 94 X 50 feet. There should be baskets on two opposite ends of the court. The court is either made out of wood or cement. The ten feet high basket is made out of steel rim with a net attached. One score, also called shot, is counted as two points or three points when aimed from a distance of 7.24 meter. The game is divided into four quarters which each of them with a time limit of twelve minutes.

A break of fifteen minutes is allowed after the first two quarter and in between each quarter, there is a break of two minutes. In the third quarter, both the teams exchange their baskets. At a time five members of each team are present on the court. Permission is given to have up to seven substitutes. Other than the coach assistant coaches, statisticians, managers, trainers and doctors assists a team. Other equipments, other than the ball, required during the game are scoreboard, score sheets, clocks, stop clocks, whistles, and alternating possession arrows.

The male and the female player require to wear a pair of shorts and a jersey with clear number printed on the front and the back. High-top sneakers can be worn to provide extra ankle support. Sometimes the coach can request clock stoppages in between the game, if he wants to discuss something important with his team members. Usually three referees watch over the game. Other things like timekeeping, fouls by an individual or a team, score, team possession arrow, shot clock and player substitutions are taken care of by the table officials.

Over the period of time, various positions have been developed in basketball. Initially there were one guard, two forwards, and two centers or two guards, two forwards, and one center. Later on point guard, shooting guard, small forward, power forward and center positions were added.

Actions, which lead to violations are double dribbling, traveling, and carrying the ball and shot clock. Foul is illegal physical contact with the opponent team members, which would hinder them.

The other variations of the professional basketball are wheelchair basketball for the physically handicapped, water basketball to be played in a swimming pool, beach basketball which has very few or no regulations, half court game which has only one basket, and street ball and one-on-one which has two players and smaller court.

Handicapped - Accessible Home Design

Richard Taylor, AIA asked:

“Accessibility”, as it pertains to the design of buildings, is a term that most of us are somewhat familiar with. The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (the “ADA”) mandates that most buildings used by the public be designed for ease of use by persons with many kinds of disabilities. We’ve all seen accessible parking spaces, ramps, and washrooms in retails stores, airports, and office buildings.

Homes, too, should incorporate design features and products that are easier to use by people of all ages and abilities. It’s a concept called “universal design”. For most people however, the image of an accessible home is one of fluorescent lights, wheelchair ramps, and white porcelain plumbing fixtures – more like a clinic than a home.

But an accessible home needn’t be like that at all. In fact, many design features and fixtures that work well for accessibility are also well suited for just about anyone. Accessible design is often just plain good design - a well-integrated accessible home design can and should extend a home’s usability through more than just one phase of family life.

Start In The Kitchen

Making a house more accessible isn’t particularly difficult or expensive. You might even have some universal design principals at work in your kitchen now.

“Side-by-side” refrigerators are more usable by a person in a wheelchair - unlike a unit with the freezer mounted on top. Inside the refrigerator, sliding shelves eliminate the need to reach all the way to the back to retrieve what you want.

A very common disabling condition associated with aging is reduced physical strength, which can make cooking in a large pot difficult if it has to be lifted into and out of the sink to fill with water. Instead of a standard kitchen faucet, install a “goose-neck” spout that allows the pot to be filled without lifting it into the sink. And place the cooktop nearby so that the pot can be easily slid across the countertop to the burner – no lifting required.

The latest in dishwasher design is the “drawer” type like those from Fisher & Paykel and KitchenAid. Drawer dishwashers don’t require as much bending over to load and unload and because there’s no door in the way, they’re more easily used from a sitting position.

Staying Home

As the American population ages and as housing prices escalate, many homeowners are trying to stay in their homes longer. Too often however, family homes are primarily designed for young families and become rapidly obsolete when they can no longer provide the convenience and safety that older citizens need. It’s an unfortunate result of a “disposable home” mentality – but that’s a topic for a future article!

A few simple design changes can make almost any home better able to support changing lifestyles, as ease of use and safety become important issues. One of the easiest is the installation of blocking for grab bars at appropriate places in the bath when the house is built. These simple and inexpensive structural supports are used for the future installation of grab bars, which provide increased safety in showers, tubs, and at toilets.

Another easy change is using “lever-type” door hardware - popular because of its looks and ease of use but also a requirement for persons with reduced strength or restricted mobility. Widening the doors a few inches can also extend the useable life of the house. Standard thirty-inch doors aren’t wide enough for wheelchairs and can be difficult for anyone with trouble walking. A thirty-six inch wide door solves both problems and makes moving furniture a lot easier, too.

Ups and Downs

Stairs are the biggest obstacle to making any home accessible. Typically, a fully accessible home must be all on one level – no stairs, step-downs, or even door thresholds. But a one-level home is more costly to build than a two-story and may require a larger property.

A better solution is a residential elevator. Sound expensive? Compared to the cost of a one-level home on a larger lot, an elevator is a very reasonable expense. It only adds about sixty square feet to the floor plan, and enables easy access to the first floor, the second floor, and the basement. Even better, only the elevator shaft need be installed now – the actual elevator equipment doesn’t have to be in place until it’s needed, maybe many years down the road.

Easier Than You Might Think

In most cases, accessible or universal design isn’t much more than good design sense and a desire to make houses usable by everyone – and isn’t that a worthy goal for any house, regardless of the current occupants? Our houses are sometimes a little too disposable – we can easily make them less so by making them more functional for a wide range of homeowners with and without disabilities. We’ll all benefit from design that helps people stay in their homes longer.

Top Ten Boxing Movies

Jason Forthofer asked:

Boxing is a combat sport of English origin in which two participants of similar weight fight each other with their fists in a series of one to three-minute intervals called rounds. Victory is achieved if the opponent is knocked down and unable to get up before the referee counts to ten (a Knockout, or KO) or if the opponent is deemed too injured to continue (a Technical Knockout, or TKO). If there is no stoppage of the fight before an agreed number of rounds, a winner is determined either by the referee's decision or by judges' scorecards.

In the passage above boxing is explained as two people fighting of similar weight, however rarely of similar backgrounds. In ancient times gladiators were pited against each other to fight to their deaths for entertainment. A gladiator was often the underdog fighting for survival against a superior force.

On the big screen boxing movies have become more successful than any other sports related film. Boxing movies such as Rocky and million Dollar Baby are the only sports related films to win Acadamey Awards for Best Picture.

Directors of boxing movies have the great ability of creating characters with so much in common with the audience. Characters who come from disadvantage backgrounds that are used to scrapping for food and money to support families and loved ones, thus when it comes to fighting for survival in a boxing ring they have what it takes to win.

However they never have the guidance or confidence to realize their full potential. This is where directors creates a kind, lovable, knowledgeable character who acts as a father figure and mentor. The audience is then taken on a journey of these two characters quest for glory which involves some of the following, heartbreak, struggle, sacrifice and belief.

In any sport no matter what it is people will be drawn naturally to the underdog and cheer for them. People don't like favorites winning unless of course they have the favorite backed! This is where directors create another character one that the audience dislikes, rude, arrogant, cocky etc.. who is at the top of the sport.

These two rivals are finally pitted against each other, in one corner you have a fighter that everyone hates and in the other corner a fighter whom everyone has come to love and admire.

Audiences like happy endings they are brought up with the stories of Snow white, Cinderella etc.. they want to exit the cinema happier than they entered. They want the underdog to win because they know how it feels to be an underdog.

The audience admires a character with pride strength and courage. Great Directors are aware of this knowing what the audience desires and gives it to them.

Boxing movies work because everyone loves a good underdog story!

Buildings and Facilities - Provision for Wheelchairs

Eric Comforth asked:

Persons having difficulty in walking, those suffering from severe illness or bodily injury, and certain physically disabled persons have no other option but to use wheelchairs. The typical type of wheelchair is made up of a seat with a backrest and a footrest, along with two small front caster wheels and two larger rear wheels. Even though there are standard versions of wheelchairs, they are usually customized to suit the need of the patient or the disabled person.

The seat size, seat-to-floor height, controls, and certain other items are normally tailor-made for the individual patient to provide maximum comfort. Several optional accessories are also available, like safety belts, adjustable backrests and anti-tip bars. Mounts for crutches, oxygen cylinders, drink holders, etc. are also provided. Using the so-called omniwheel or the mecanum wheel facilitates multidirectional movement. However, it is provided only when it is absolutely necessary, since control is not as easy as the standard types of wheelchairs.

The types of wheelchairs are self-propelled, attendant-propelled, and powered. Depending on the condition of the patient or the disabled person, one of these is selected so as to give maximum comfort for the user. Attendant-propelled wheelchairs come with back handles for easy pushing. A 4 or 5-ampere rechargeable battery runs powered types. Both dry type and wet type batteries are available, though the dry type is the most preferred one. Pediatric wheelchairs are meant for the use of pregnant women. Wheelchairs for disabled sports persons are special types, incorporating features required for participation in sports.

The American with Disabilities Act of 1990 stipulates certain mandatory provisions in building construction for ease of operation by patients or disabled persons using wheelchairs. It is a statutory requirement in the United States that all new construction for public use have to be built to ADA norms. Construction of these buildings should conform to specifications of wheelchair accessible construction. Special wheelchair ramps and elevators are added in buildings so that persons with walking disabilities would not face any undue hardship. Powered doors, fixtures like sinks with lower heights, as well as large-spaced toilets with grab bars for easy maneuvering are other requirements that are generally provided for in wheelchair accessible construction of buildings.

Hospitals that have limited floors are constructed with wheelchair ramps for all the floors. However, in large multistory hospitals and buildings, the wheelchair ramp is provided only in the ground floor or the first 2 to 3 floors. However, care is taken to ensure that the person using the wheelchair has easy access to lifts, so that they could go to any floor without difficulty. The design of the wheelchair ramp has to be done accurately to avoid difficulty while climbing up and/or skidding while coming down the ramp.

Portable wheelchair ramps are provided mostly in old buildings, where originally no provision was made for persons using wheelchairs. Public places like bus stations and train stations also provide portable wheelchair ramps chiefly to make buses and trains easy for persons in wheelchairs. Buses with low boarding platforms are also in use for such disabled persons. Airports too invariably provide such portable wheelchair ramps, when needed.

Fishing is one of the most favorite pastimes of Americans. Retired persons and persons recovering from illness simply love fishing to pass their time outdoors. Hence, fishing spots normally provide wheelchair accessible fishing facilities. Fishing is the best alternative for persons who can not practice active exercises. This outdoor pastime invigorates the body and also lifts the spirit of the person. Hence, disabled persons, retired people and those recuperating from illness keenly seek wheelchair accessible fishing facilities.

Normal lifts that accommodate six to eight persons would be too small for easy maneuvering of wheelchairs. Public places like government buildings, hospitals, courts, bus & train stations, airports, etc. are frequented by persons using wheelchairs. Hence, such places install larger lifts that facilitate easy wheelchair operations. Such special wheelchair lifts are mandatory for newly constructed buildings to enable them to conform to ADA norms.

Beauty on the Move - Women in Wheelchairs

Adam Hefner asked:

Once, society viewed disabled people as dependent, unable to contribute to society. This has changed significantly. Today, disabled persons, particularly women in wheelchairs, have begun to destroy this stigmatized perception with amazing accomplishments. Furthermore, manufacturers have developed designer chairs to accent the incredible beauty and strength of these women.

Last year, New York designers held a fashion show specifically directed to display these chairs. The show was hosted by four women who founded Discovery For Design, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of women who rely on wheelchairs. One of these women, Marilyn Hamilton, is the co-inventor of the Quickie wheelchair. The other three were sports, arts, and business dynamos who experienced traumatic injuries and landed in wheelchairs.

This fashion show was dedicated not only to stylish wheelchairs, but also to fashionably designed clothing ensembles specifically created to flatter women who spend a significant amount of time in wheelchairs. The "Roll" Models were four women selected from across the country who had become disabled and demonstrated inspirational strength and perseverance despite their health problems or accidents.

One of these fascinating women, Jenny Smith, experienced an accident while practicing gymnastics. Her spinal cord injury, which occurred 17 years ago, has not prevented her from driving, graduating college with a Master's Degree in Psychology, or working for the Mobility Project, which has delivered over 1000 wheelchairs to disabled people in developing countries.

In comparison, Melissa Holley was working her way through college when an auto accident resulted in her spinal cord injury. She has spoken, attended fundraising events, and campaigned to bring an experimental spinal cord treatment procedure to the United States. She has not allowed her wheelchair to disable her life.

Michele Boardman is a young woman diagnosed with muscular dystrophy. She was confined to a wheelchair by age 12. Despite this, she fulfilled her dream of attending college and plans to become a pediatric genetic counselor. She was one of nine youths throughout the world honored by the Yes I Can! Foundation in 2004.

The fourth model, Rosemary Rosetti, is a successful woman whose life was detoured by the falling of a huge tree that crushed her spinal cord during a bicycle ride. After her recovery, she began to travel the world discussing her journey in living life actively in a wheelchair. She has published a book on this topic, and was recently crowned Ms. Wheelchair America.

These women are a tribute to the amazing strength and beautiful journey of which women in wheelchairs are capable. Their story is truly an inspiration to us all.

Wheelchair People Are Not A Different Species

Peter Finch asked:

Do you feel that you are different because fate has put you in a wheelchair? Do you want a life as normal as possible doing all the things that most others can? Well you can do it, and those who feel that it is not within your capabilities can stay away from you!

In the movie The Sound of Music, Maria tells herself that when the lord closes a door somewhere he opens a window. This is true for everyday folk like you and me too. We all have good days and bad days. The whole deal is that you take the good days and store them away and when the bad days creep up, bring out those good day feelings and then work your way through the bad days.

Funny sort of advice you would say to people in wheelchairs. It is understood that simple day to day things that normal people take for granted are difficult jobs for you to complete.
