The Advent of Wheelchairs

Kirk Peterson asked:

In the year 1881, the first modern wheelchair was unveiled in Europe. Since then, people with walking disabilities have found hope. Even if they would not be able to walk again, they would be able to take mobility through the use of the simple machine. Basically, wheelchairs are machines simple seating furniture that is attached to a pair of wheels to facilitate mobility.

In the 20th century, more initiatives were done to be able to further contribute to the development of wheelchairs. In 1918, the pioneering motorized wheelchairs were developed. Following that, in 1933 miner Herbert Everest and his engineer friend Harry Jennings Sr built wheelchairs for their own use. Mr Everest was paralyzed in a mining facility accident.

The modern wheelchairs are direct descendants of the wheelchair jointly developed by a team of inventors and innovators, including Jeff Minnebraker of California, Rainier Kuschall of Europe and Errol Markheim of Germany. The group was able to come up with a wheelchair that was lightweight and highly adjustable. The wheelchair was made up purely of aluminum, which is attributed for the light weight. Wheelchairs have since been convenient and light and were easily transported from a site to several other different locations.

The modern wheelchairs

Since the development of wheelchairs, many initiatives have been made to modify and update the basic features of the machines. In the past, wheelchairs were heavy and were very bulky to accommodate the user. Now, those features are scrapped and are reversed so as to provide users with convenience and easier access to wheelchairs’ usefulness.

The modern wheelchairs are also different and exhibit significant improvements from the early models and types of wheelchairs that have been rolled out earlier in the market. While in the past, wheelchairs were principally and basically pulled and pushed to become mobile, modern wheelchairs are employing the aid of different energy sources to facilitate movement and mobility.

On top of that, modern wheelchairs are also made to become more comfortable and cozy. The seats are made softer and cushions used are better and more convenient to facilitate more comfort. The wheels are made bigger, lighter and more efficient so as to facilitate better movement and mobility.

Modern types of wheelchairs

Wheelchairs are currently categorized into two big groups, namely, manual wheelchairs and power wheelchairs. The two differ on how they basically operate.

Manual wheelchairs are impressively the direct forefathers of modern types of wheelchairs. These wheelchairs are basically moved by manual or mechanical pushing and pulling. There are two basic and most common subgroups: self-propelled and attendant-propelled. Self-propelled wheelchairs tend to lend some form of independence. The wheelchairs enable the user to decide and empower himself or herself on the direction of the operations and the speed. The user manipulates the wheels directly.

Attendant-propelled wheelchairs tend to make users dependent on other people. That is because these wheelchairs move when they are propelled or pushed by an attendant or another person who is taking care of the wheelchair user. As such, the attendant has the more control of the direction and speed of the machine, with or without the instructions and directions of the user.

Power wheelchairs

Power wheelchairs are those that are operated less conventionally. These machines run using energy derived from energy sources like electricity and gasoline. It can also be easily inferred that power wheelchairs are more convenient and are more preferred by a rising number of wheelchair users all over the world.

The manner by which power chairs are operated also varies from traditionally and conventionally operated ones. Power wheelchairs can be run using steering wheels like in cars or in modern times, are sun by joysticks like those used in modern consumer electronic products.

Prices for different types of wheelchairs also differ. Of course, it is easily inferred that wheelchairs are a little premium priced especially in the modern markets. The materials used even in the simplest wheelchairs are costly. Thus, the cheapest brands are also sometimes not afforded by common and average-income households.

Power wheelchairs are having tag prices that are significantly and noticeably high. With the modern technology used in the development and manufacturing of such products, it is widely anticipated and expected that such sophisticated wheelchairs are expensive, making them impossible to be afforded by the masses. Aside from that, maintenance and operations are costly because of the energy requirements.

Beauty and Women in Wheelchairs

Simon Hemmings asked:

Today, disabled persons, particularly women in wheelchairs, have begun to destroy this stigmatized perception with amazing accomplishments like the Ms. American Wheelchair.

Once, society viewed disabled people as dependent, unable to contribute to society. This has changed and today, disabled persons, particularly women in wheelchairs, have begun to destroy this stigmatized perception with amazing accomplishments. Furthermore, manufacturers have began to develop designer chairs to cater for women.

Only in 2007 designers from New York held a fashion show specifically directed to display wheelchairs. The fashion show was hosted by four women who founded the “Discovery For Design”, a non-profit organization dedicated to women who rely on wheelchairs. One of these women, Marilyn Hamilton, is the co-inventor of the Quickie wheelchair. The other three were sports, arts, and business dynamos who experienced traumatic injuries and landed in wheelchairs.

This fashion show was dedicated not only to stylish wheelchairs, but also to fashionably designed clothing ensembles specifically created to flatter women who spend a significant amount of time in wheelchairs. The runway Models were four women selected from across the country who had become disabled.

First of these fascinating women, Jenny Smith, experienced an accident while practicing gymnastics. Her spinal cord injury, which occurred 17 years ago, since this she has driven, graduated college with a Master’s Degree, or working for the Mobility Project.

The second is, Melissa Holley was working her way through college when an auto accident resulted in her spinal cord injury and campaigned to bring an experimental spinal cord treatment procedure to the United States. She has not allowed her wheelchair to disable her life.

Michele Boardman the third, is a young woman diagnosed with muscular dystrophy. She was confined to a wheelchair by age 12. Despite this, she attended college, she was one of nine youths throughout the world honored by the Yes I Can! Foundation in 2004.

The fourth model, Rosemary Rosetti, is a successful woman whose life was detoured by the falling of a huge tree that crushed her spinal cord during a bicycle ride. After her recovery, she began to travel the world discussing her journey in living life actively in a wheelchair. She has published a book on this topic, and wasa previous Ms. Wheelchair America.

These women are a tribute to the amazing strength and beautiful journey of which women in wheelchairs are capable. Their story is truly an inspiration to us all.

Using a Vehicle Wheelchair Lift

Sean Noughtly asked:

The first wheelchair has roots that date back many thousands of years and since then, they have been used by almost all cultures. These early wheelchairs did not follow any specific pattern though, but were merely devices used to carry a person and often were reserved for the royalty, who had very extravagant carriages designed. It would not be until after the First World War that wheelchairs began to resemble what we are accustomed to today. Currently there are many different types of mobility vehicles available, many of which utilize battery power. Transporting these battery powered mobility vehicles can often be very difficult, unless you have a vehicle lift.

Vehicle lifts are installed into or onto a van, SUV, truck, or car. They allow a mobility vehicle to be easily moved and usually are electrically powered. There are a few types of vehicle lifts that are available.

One of the most common is the external vehicle lift. These are designed to be mounted onto a standard receiving hitch. A hitch is most often used to attach a trailer to a car or truck, but they have many other practical uses. A receiving hitch is square shaped and allows a square shaped shaft to be slid into it.

External vehicle lifts are simply slid into the vehicles hitch. These lifts are very popular due to how easily they can be installed and removed, which usually only takes a minute or two. Most of these lifts use a small platform that is lowered onto the ground and allow the mobility device to be driven directly onto the platform. They are then raised off of the ground. These electronically controlled external vehicle lifts are either powered from a rechargeable battery pack or get their power from the vehicle's battery.

There are a few available that do not use any power at all and instead are simply tilted down, then tilted back up once the scooter is on the platform. These lifts usually can not support as much weight as battery powered vehicle lifts. The upside is that you do not need to worry about recharging a battery or having cables installed, but as a safety feature, many of the more popular battery powered external vehicle lifts have a manual override, which can be used if you run out of juice.

The other type of lift is the internal lift and these come in two flavors. Those that own SUVs, trucks and vans are able to use a platform lift that works similar to the external vehicle lifts. A platform extends from inside the vehicle and the scooter is driven onto it. The platform is then retracted into the vehicle. Many of these lifts have an available adapter, which can be used to charge your mobility vehicle.

For those who wish to use their lift with a car, a crane type internal vehicle lift is available. These lifts use a cable winch system that attaches to the mobility vehicle and lifts it off of the ground. They pivot, so the mobility vehicle can be swung into the car. They are also used in larger vehicles.

How to Get Mobile Again With Light Weight Wheelchairs

Simon Hemmings asked:

It can be very frustrating to us when we become restricted to do things what we have done for many years and worse when we feel dependent on others. Sometimes we get depressed about being helpless and dependent on others. These are some the emotions we go though when we are stuck in wheelchairs.

By using a lightweight wheelchair we can begin to lead a normal as a life as possible. Due to its lightweight we have more options and fewer limitations to what we can do and where we can go. A more independent person we can become again.

There are many benefits of lightweight wheelchair over a more traditional manual chair. Of course as the word says lightweight is one of them, typical lightweight wheel chairs can weigh as little as 19lbs and with this we are able to propel ourselves around, lift them into the car and generally man handle them easier compared to other types of wheel chairs.

Another plus is they can be operated by battery, in this way we can move around with a minimum of effort. A very good plus point is it is useful for a patient who is lacking strength to move the wheelchair themselves.Because it is battery operated, it improves the patient’s mobility and it’s made as a more specialized chair. Wheelchairs can now be modified in many different applications. The lightweight wheelchairs also give a user the freedom to move even with a small quantity of effort.

Manual wheelchair can be sometimes be very awkward because of the weight. Luckily, lightweight wheelchairs are already out in the market for a while. Most of this kind of wheelchair are coded as K0004 (a Medicare code) which lessens the cost as compared to a regular manual wheelchair.

When it comes to the price, lightweight wheelchairs are very inexpensive compared so when you are deciding to buy a lightweight wheelchair, you should try to consider its functionality. If necessary, try to look for the wheel chair accessories accompanied with the purchase that could be a great help for the user’s needs.

He is a few pointers to consider before buying a lightweight wheelchair:

• Most of the lightweight wheelchair weighs 29 to 33 pounds. This is appropriate for moving and for daily use but others can weigh far less.

• Most lightweight wheelchairs have changeable back heights, flip-back armrest, seats and quick-release functionality.

• Choose a wheelchair with a changeable tire. Do not go for a wheelchair that requires the entire wheel unit to be changed.

• If the wheelchair has already flip-back arms, you will not need a wheelchair with removable arms anymore. Flip-backs will be enough and can already satisfy the user’s needs. • If you are planning to buy a seat pillow, it can be a factor in adding the height of the user’s seating position.

• A strong frame, arm rests, leg rest and a good brake are some of the important features which you should look for when buying a lightweight wheelchair.

Use these pointers and you are assured of the best quality lightweight wheelchair available in the market. Lastly, it is most important that you also consider the needs of the person who will use it. Make sure that they will be comfortable in its use.

Remember to let the person realize that it is not a sign of his being disabled. Instead, let the person know that his lightweight wheelchair is the tool for him or her to start a new life again.

How Do You Spell Wheelchair? It’s Spelled: “F r e e d o m”

Rc Rougeux asked:

How do you spell "wheelchair"? The answer is: F – R – E – E – D – O – M! Wheelchairs give the gift of mobility to people who are not able to get around as ably as most. That doesn't mean that wheelchairs are only for those who have lost the use of their legs completely…on the contrary! Wheelchairs help many people get around who can walk…but walk with great difficulty.

There are a variety of reasons why you might need a wheelchair, either temporarily or permanently. Years ago, they were a rare sight as they were large contraptions that were difficult to get around in. Today, though, they have come a long way from the wooden behemoths they once were. Now, they are lightweight and very strong and are able to get into places that they once were not able to get though (such as through doors or over street curbs).

Thankfully, as wheelchairs become affordable and available to more and more people, society has become increasingly accepting and accommodating to those in wheelchairs – which includes installing ramps, widening doors, and retrofitting buildings with accessibility options. It's far from perfect still, but they've come a long way! What's more, the wheelchair user doesn't have to rely on someone else to move them around any more. The large rear wheels are easy to roll with upper body strength, or some users prefer to have an electric wheelchair which allows them to get around with the aid of batteries powering the wheelchair and a joystick (or suck and blow straw) steering it. These advancements give the chair's user not only the gift of mobility but also of independence!

There are many types of wheelchairs out there. Check out the availability online to see which one is right for you. You're sure to find some within your price range and designed suitably for your lifestyle. For example, if you live in a place that gets a lot of snow in the winter, you may want a wheelchair with larger tires to push you through the snow… and perhaps coarse or knobby tires to give you traction. Or, if you have long distances to go, consider getting a wheelchair that uses a smaller rolling rail on the outside of the rear wheel, so that you don't have to move your arms nearly as much to get the wheelchair moving. There are even wheelchairs designed for professional wheelchair racers. They are lower to the ground, lighter in weight, and have the user in a tilted racing position…it may not be comfortable for day to day use, but if you like competitive sports, it's a popular and exciting sport and there is equipment for it.

If you need assistance with your mobility but don't want to get a wheelchair, there are other options, including electric scooters. These are popular choices for people who do have some mobility but find longer distances to be a little more difficult. You might find that they are useful for carrying more things if, for example, you go grocery shopping.

Wwe Divas Create Controversy

Wwecharacterstheblog asked:

The WWE brand of professional wrestling is no stranger to creating controversy in order to get buzz and publicity running rampant for its product. Over the years, WWE has done everything from faking Chairman Vince McMahon's death in an exploding limo to having wrestlers electrocuted in the arena or run over by cars. Former superstar, Stone Cold Steve Austin has been involved in numerous controversial events including hosing down Mr. McMahon, The Rock and other WWE staff in the ring with a hose from a beer truck. And while you may think that its lovely WWF and WWE Divas are mainly talented eye candy in the ring, they too have had their share of controversial storylines and plots. Some of the divas involved in these plots include Lita, Torrie Wilson, Dawn Marie and Trish Stratus.

In 2001, WWE Diva Trish Stratus found herself amidst a power trip involving boss Vince McMahon. In her storyline, Trish played the role of Vince McMahon's mistress in an extra-marital affair. The boss carried out this affair while it was believed his wife Linda was institutionalized and confined to a wheelchair during a divorce. During this story, Mr. McMahon's daughter, Stephanie, began showing her dislike for Stratus, leading to an in-ring feud. At the No Way Out Pay-Per-View, Stephanie was able to defeat Trish in a match thanks to assistance from William Regal. The next night Vince McMahon partnered with Trish Stratus in a tag match against Stephanie and Regal. However, the match was a setup, and ended with Regal performing his finisher on Stratus, followed by Stephanie dumping a buck of sewage on her. The humiliation of Trish Stratus continued on the following week's episode of Raw, with Mr. McMahon ordering Stratus to strip down to lingerie and bark in the ring like a dog. The controversial storyline was said to have drawn much criticism from fans and women's rights groups.

The WWE experimented with a lesbian storyline back in 2003, involving two sexy WWE divas, Torrie Wilson and Dawn Marie. At the time, Dawn Marie was planning to marry Torrie Wilson's real life father, Al. Dawn began to confess feelings for Torrie as well, and blackmailed her into doing what she wanted. Dawn promised if Torrie met her in a hotel and did as she asked, then Dawn would call off her wedding to Al. Dawn manipulated Torrie and the two shared an on-screen kiss, as well as an off-screen hotel encounter. Dawn still married Al, going back on her promise. The story also involved Al dying of a heart attack due to rigorous love-making with Dawn. Eventually, Torrie ended this feud by defeating Dawn at the Royal Rumble.

One last former diva who was involved in controversies was Amy Dumas, who was better known as "Lita". Lita is the former girlfriend of superstars such as Edge, Matt Hardy and Kane. Lita was involved in several attempted weddings, as well as a miscarriage plot involving Kane's baby. But one of Lita's incidents in particular earned the Monday Night Raw program in 2006 one of its highest ratings. The episode occurred following the January 8, 2006 New Year's Revolution Pay-Per-View, where Edge had defeated John Cena to win the WWE title. Edge promised to have an in-ring celebration involving a love-making session with Lita. On the following Raw, the two stripped down and got into a bed set up in the ring. WWE Superstar Ric Flair came down to the ring to interrupt the proceedings, causing Edge to leave to fight him. John Cena came to the ring and attacked Lita, giving her an FU. During the attack there was a wardrobe mishap and Lita exposed part of her chest. The event known as the "Live Sex Celebration" earned Raw one of its highest ratings in some time.

All in all, the lovely WWE divas enjoy their fair share of controversy. Lita, Trish Stratus and Torrie Wilson definitely proved this as they've paved the way for the WWE to continue trying to push the limits. Only time will tell how far the WWE attempts to go with its various storylines involving these talented female wrestlers.

Folding Wheelchairs

Simon Hemmings asked:

Once you’ve at the point of deciding on a manual lightweight wheelchair, you will have to decide between two types of wheelchair, rigid wheelchair or folding frame wheelchair.

Folding wheelchairs tend to have a little more flexibility than rigid models this will have an advantage when your moving over slightly uneven surfaces as the folding frame wheelchair will bend and flex according to the terrain, but on even floors the rigid frame tend to be more stable. Folding wheelchairs come in two designs that is lightweight and heavy-duty models, for anything between $1000 and $4,000. If you buying your first wheelchair you will be wise to try both rigid and folding wheelchair styles to see which suits you the best.

Disadvantages of having a Folding Wheelchair:

Has adjustable and removable parts that could easily be broken or lost. Not rigid enough for certain sports. Seat angle is usually not adjustable. Harder to push than rigid models as it’s flexible. Generally heavier than rigid chairs. Less durable then rigid models.

Being Overweight Sucks

Tom Rooney asked:

You struggle to get out of bed in the morning and feel as tired as when you laid down last night and your back is aching.  You stumble to the bathroom, shower and then primp in the mirror and contemplate what item of clothing to choose that will hide more than it shows.  As you walk to your car for your commute to work you think you could have saved some money with a compact, but the seats are just too small.  Your size has again made you realize that being overweight really sucks.

Do you take solace that you're now the average person in America since over 66.3% of adults (age 20 and older) are overweight or obese.  These statistics are taken from the National Center for Health Statistics.  Of course the statistics are only one way of looking at this epidemic, since emotions usually aren't factored in.  Millions of people are affected by this fat problem and its cost is reflected in 3 major areas:

Health - The data is in and being overweight or obese leads to or causes a number of medical factors that those in a healthy weigh category don't see as problems. Here are some stats on those factors of overweight or obese individuals taken from the Surgeon General's website.

Premature death - An estimated 300000 premature deaths are attributed to overweight. Individuals that have a BMI > 30 have a 50% to 100% risk of premature death. BMI stands for Body Mass Index and you can see a calculator at the Center for Disease Control

Heart Disease - Incidents of heart disease (heart attack, congestive heart failure, sudden cardiac death, angina, chest pain, and abnormal heart rhythm) is dramatically increased with a BMI > 25.

Diabetes - Over 80% of all people with diabetes are there because of their overweight condition.

Cancer - Overweight or obese increases your risk for different types of cancer to include; (cancer of the lining of the uterus), colon, gall bladder, prostate, kidney, and postmenopausal breast cancer.

Breathing Problems - Sleep apnea and asthma are associated with weight increases.

Arthritis - For every 2 pound increase in weight you increase the risk of arthritis by 9% to 13%.

Reproductive Complications - Overweight mothers to be have a 10 times greater increased in high blood pressure, low blood sugar and death to mother and baby.

Additional Consequences - Gall bladder dieses, incontinence, depression, increased surgical risks, joint (especially knee) problems and last but not least, a major drain on energy.

Financially - The money associated with being overweight or obese is staggering.  The weight loss industry is in the billions of dollars so there must be a target audience that they're going after.  Here are some of the items that are connected to this issue. An article from the New York Times called Extra Weight, Higher Costs spells out the problems as well.

Health Care Costs - The staggering dollar amount for caring for those individuals who are fat are associated with all the health related items above, but also take on issues like oversize beds, wheelchairs, toilet seats, scales, etc. and this doesn't even take into account the lost time at work and increased doctor visits.

Transportation - As I stated in the beginning, larger cars have been manufactured so that individuals can sit in them comfortably.  The increase I n size has also increase the cost and cost to fuel since most are made with larger engines to haul people around.  Airlines, trains and ships have all had to make changes to increase the room necessary for a larger society.

Home Living Issues - Increase in the size of furniture has increased cost in order to reinforce the padding and structure.  Refrigerators, Washers Dryers and other appliances had to be increased in order to account for more in them.

Feel Good Items - Those things that are made specifically for the extra large person that attempts to work on their psyche.  Stores that cater to Big Beautiful Women (BBW) or oversize men.  Dining out from fast food to fancy where extra size is normal fare.  Jewelry with extra links, shoes with extra widths.

Emotionally - As was stated in the Health related category, depression is a large problem for those that are overweigh and obese.  These problems are also enhanced by how others look at these individuals and the rejection that comes from being in this condition. We have included oversize, extra size, double extra large, and supersize as new words in our vocabulary.

Job opportunities - Even though this is considered a protected class of individuals now, discrimination exists when applying for a new job or seeking a promotion based upon weight problems.  Some managers say "If they can't control their weight, how can they control any aspect of business?"  You can find an article from Forbes.com titled Is Your Weight Affecting your Job?

Relationships - If you seek a significant other as a partner in life, you may find that your personality is not all you can get by on.  The perspective mate pool dries up fast with the stigma that comes with being overweight.

Activities - This is related to health as well, but large people get excluded in certain activities like sports, dance, drives, etc. because of the ability to keep up or even participate.

Insults - There are more insults projected at overweight and obese then at any other stereotype.  The reason is that most people in this condition take it or practice self deprecating rather than demanding this practice stop.

Being overweight or obese really does suck for the millions of individuals dealing with this problem.  The reality is all the items above that show what you go through if you have this excess fat.  One shining ray of hope is that you can do something about it.  Once you start to shed some of the additional pound you can reverse health and emotional factors.  The financial situation will eventually correct itself as well.  The time to start is right now, not tomorrow.  If you took the time to read this article you may feel you're in this number.  Get some help and get well again.
